My cat with ear mites & hematoma is scratching. Should I go to the ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

We are taking care of outdoor cat that has ear mites and has a hematoma on his ear flap. He has a surgical apt in 3 days, however, today he is really scratching and shaking and rubbing his head. Should we take him to the ER? He is not on any medications or treatment. The vet did not prescribe anything yet. Thank you.

The ear mites need to be treated before surgery is performed on the hematoma. There are some ear mite treatments available at pet stores, but their quality isn't as good as prescription medications. I would recommend calling your local emergency clinic to see if they even carry ear mite medications - some don't carry them in stock.
