My pregnant dog has green milk. What should I do to save puppies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Samoyed | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 4 months old | 50 lbs

Hello, I have an emergency right now. So 3 months ago my female akita was pregnant and she had produced milk 3 weeks prior to whelping and i noticed that her milk was green. I let her puppies to nurse from her and they all die. Today my samoyed is pregnant and she also has been producing milk since 10 days ago even though I predict she will go to labor in the next 3-4 days. Today i notice that her milk is also green. This is really stressful. I don’t want her puppies to die too this time.

Green or discolored milk indicates mastitis or an infection in the mammary glands. Your veterinarian should examine her and put her on an appropriate prescription antibiotic to treat the infection before the pups are born. If the milk is not normal by the time the pups are born, you will have to bottle feed them and not allow them to nurse. Your dog is past the recommended age for breeding. It would be best to not breed her again. The recommended age for a larger breed such as an Akita to be bred for puppies is 2-5 years of age. I would recommend that you discuss having her spayed after this litter. Thank you
