What to do for a kitten with bloody diarrhea and a protruding anus?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 22 days old | 1.5 lbs

I got a 7 week old kitten on Thursday. He arrived and has had bloody diarrhea since. He has been eating kitten food and drinking water. I'm pretty sure he wasn't weaned from mom and was last nursed that day. He is playful and seems like a normal kitten. Maybe a little sleepy. Today his stool has been mucousy and bloody. It's like a constant drip. I've had to wash his backside several times a day. His little butthole also seems to be protruding. What can I do?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Prince. Congrats on your new kitten, but I'm sorry he isn't well! If he wasn't weaned and is now eating a kitten food, that could be causing the bloody diarrhea. I agree, it does look like his anus is protruding a bit. Given that he's eating and drinking and otherwise acting normally, it's fine to wait until the morning to wait to take him into a vet. He should see one first thing in the morning to get treated. Tonight, keep feeding him and giving him water, and keep him warm and comfortable. I hope this helps!
