My senior cat with CKD is losing weight. Is immune decline next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My CKD 16-year old neutered Himalayan cat is losing weight rapidly. 8.3 pounds in August 2019. 8.0 pounds in March 2020. 7.0 pounds May 2020. However, he has a good quality of life. He receives fluids every day and eats a prescription diet. There no other signs or symptoms other than weight loss. Am I to assume that when his weight gets in the 5 and 6 pounds his immune system will eventually become compromised and he will then show a rapid decline?

Unfortunately, that is often the case. They continue to lose weight and waste away with kidney failure. As long as he is doing his normal things I would not be overly concerned at this point. If you want to start him on an immune booster you can do that. I would suggest Imuquin. Check with your vet first before using it since they are privy to all of his medical history but I think it should be fine to give. https://worldtails.securevetsource.com/itemView/view/198944_HomeDelivery.pml?productId=135966
