My Great Pyrenees has a raw, dark hot spot, what to do at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Pyrenees | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 140 lbs

My Great Pyrenees has a hot spot on his back, near his butt, that he is chewing up badly. It's raw and sore now and looks like it's getting dark or black but he wont let me touch it for long enough to tell. He had an infection in his under arm before which required medication but our Vet is closed until Tuesday and I don't know what to do in the meantime.

Hi, and thanks for your question. Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.
