My cat has a swollen, red lip with pus and is sneezing. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

My cat’s bottom lip is inflamed. It’s extremely red, swollen, & puss is coming out. He’s also been sneezing. I’m not sure what is causing this or how to treat it. It’s recent. In the last couple of days or so. His diet remains the same. Nothing has changed. He’s eating regularly and he’s an indoor cat. We do have a dog that goes outside for walks and to use the bathroom. They play sometimes and hang out in the same areas of the house. My cat is a rescue and he’s 2 years old.

Hello. It looks like Firu has a particularly significant case of an eosinophilic ulcer. This may be related to some allergy in his environment. Your veterinarian can recommend some treatments that may help this to heal & hopefully slow down any reocurrances. Hopefully, he will be doing much better soon & thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
