My dog has diarrhea with mucus but is acting normal. Is it table food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 11 lbs

My mini schnauzer is having diarrhea today. It’s brownish with mucus, but she is acting completely normal and playful. She is drinking water as well. She does get the occasional table food, could this be why?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Mild diarrhoea could be caused by table food but it may be due to gastrointestinal infection. Please, put Nellie on a bland diet for 2-3 days (cooked chicken or other lean meat with rice or pasta) and get her a probiotic. You can buy probiotics for dogs over-the-counter at pet shops, local vets or online. If the diarrhoea does not resolve in 3-4 days time or Nellie starts to vomit or act unwell, please take her to your local vets for an appointment.
