My dog's eye is swollen and cut after a fight. Does he need vet care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog got in a fight with my other dog and after a few hours my dogs eye looks like this. He didn’t get bit in his eye Like from where he sees but he had a tiny cut right next to his eye in between his ear and eye and now one of his eyes is like this. Is this something that needs attention?

Hi, I would recommend to have him checked over so that the eye can be properly assessed any corneal injuries. It looks like he might have a cut on the corner of that eye, and with bite wounds you always have infection creeping into the skin so thorough cleaning of the skin/flushing of the eye is recommended.

If there was a bite or puncture from a nail to the eye it needs to be seen by a veterinarian. Your vet can place a special dye into the eye to check for injuries to it and provide you with prescription eye ointment as needed to help it heal.
