My fish has fin rot. How do I properly treat and care for him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Betta | Male

My pet fish recently got sick and I am sure it is fin rot. His color is turning pale and his fins seem to be falling off and getting shorter. He also twitches and swims aggressively sometimes. I have been using betafix for 2 days now (I pour 9 drops in his bowl) but I now want to use melafix since it specially mentions to use when fish have fin rot. Should I change his water first or wait a few days before switching medicine? I am also not sure how much of the Melafix to pour in his bowl. Thanks

Thanks for reaching out about Tony and including photos. First, test water quality for pH, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, as poor quality is often a primary cause of fin rot. Betafix and Melafix rarely improve things, so are not recommended until a diagnosis can be made. If water quality is correct, review diet as vitamin C deficiencies can also cause similar problems. Food pellets should be replaced every 3 months. Good luck.
