Is itraconazole the right med for my dog's fungal infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

+/- 5yo male dog, completely bald, full of scabs and pus, loss of appetite, eyes and ears discharge, depression (I think), weird wet-like breathing sound, swollen lymph node below mandible (I think). Was checked by a vet and said to be fungal infection. I'm suspecting it to be blastomycosis. Has gone through 5 times of medicated bath (sebazole) for this last 2 weeks, skin gets much better. Regular access to vet is difficult, location is too far. Is itraconazole the right med?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If the vet has confirmed that your dog has systemic fungal infection, then itraconazole is the right medication to use. Usually, dogs needs from 4 to even 15-18 weeks of treatment with itraconazole to completely get rid of bad fungal infections.
