My 2-week-old kitten has a raw bottom from diarrhea. What can I use?

I have a 2 week old kitten. She had a bout of diarrhea for which I gave her some ponazuril. The diarrhea has caused that area to be very raw and irritated. I have been putting desitin on it but was wondering if something else might help it more

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Selina. Poor girl. You can try putting a little vaseline on the area to see if that helps. If it doesn't help, then I would have her seen by a vet for a medicated cream. Best of luck.

I would wash it gently with a mild soap and rinse very well. If you have any a and d ointment or other diaper rash cream available then a very small amount of that applied and rubbed in well is appropriate. Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Consider a veterinary probiotic such as Bene-Bac, ProViable or FortiFlora. You can fast her for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to her regular diet afterwards.

My cat has some diarhea due to food change and a red sore bottom due to licking his bottom and rubbing his bottom on the floor. Any liquid medication or anything I can apply to his bottom to alleviate his pain?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This happens commonly. I would add 1 tsp benefiber to the food twice daily to help with that. Try a little diaper cream around the anus to help soothe the irritated area. If he is licking excessively, I recommend an E-collar. It’s usually only necessary for about 24 hours in cases like this. Contact your veterinarian for an update or recheck. DO not stop treatment unless directed by your vet. Consider a veterinary probiotic (Bene-Bac, ProViable, ProStora, FortiFlora) to promote gut health. Use a pet wipe or plain unscented baby wipe to keep her bottom clean. An e-collar (cone) can be used if she is licking. Ointment is not recommended in case she licks it off and ingests it.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I suspect your kitten may have intestinal parasites. I recommend taking her to a vet with a fresh stool sample to check for microscopic eggs. They can then treat her with the necessary dewormer. Good luck and kisses to your kitten!

I got a kitten last night. Her rectal area has poo stuck to it and seems a little red and blood like. She is. Little less than 8 weeks.
Soak her bottom in some warm water to soften the stool, then gently wipe her clean. Offer a quality canned kitten food and mix in some unflavored PediaLyte to keep her hydrated. This will help ease defecation. Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites. Deworm Lily if indicated and repeat in 2 weeks. An exam should also be done since she is a "new" pet. Once she is deemed healthy, you can discuss an appropriate vaccination protocol with your vet.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Fluffy! Fluffy is most likely having diarrhea. The mucous and blood indicated colon inflammation. Due to the blood and Fluffy being so small, I recommend you have her seen by a Vet today before the weekend. I recommend bringing a stool sample (if she passed actual feces). Possible causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, food allergy or intolerance. For a kitten so small I worry about dehydration and secondary infections. It is best to have her seen today. I hope this helps and I wish Fluffy a speedy recovery!

What can I put on a Kitten's (three weeks old) genital/butt area for 'diaper rash'?
A aloe vera or comfrey ointment can be used but be careful to check it is zinc oxide free as kittens are inclined to lick and ingest any ointments! Nappy rash crean (zinc free) can also be sued but tends to be heavier and less well absorbed, increasing the risk of ingestion. Careful dietary management and regular deworming can help improve stool quality and reduce the risk of it developing

Yes, this is similar to a diaper rash - where the skin gets irritated by the filth and sometimes infected. The fact that it's not as red anymore is a good sign that it's healing. The hair loss is not too concerning right now, because this will often happen when the old skin and hair grows out after being damaged and new skin and hair is growing in. I recommend keeping this area clean by just flushing with cool water once a day. Gently wipe away any debris and pat dry after flushing. Avoid scrubbing, or putting any ointments, soaps, or antiseptics on this area, because this can actually irritate the skin and delay healing. I hope that helps and all is well with the kittens.
