My new kitten has worms & red eye. Will my other cats get sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 lbs

Hello, I just adopted a kitten from a family who had found them in their garage. They said the mother never came back for them. Not sure how old, but she is active, eating/drinking, using her litter box, and is fairly lanky, although that might be from being under fed. We believe she has worms as her stomach is swollen. Her left eye is red on the edge of the skin but not in the eye. I have two other healthy cats and am afraid she will make them sick. She is being kept separate and has a vet appt

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is very important to keep her separated from your other cats for now. Good job that you are not letting them to be together. Once you de-worm her and put on a flea/tick product, she should be OK to meet your other cats. Also, if Felix is going to be an outdoor cat you should get her vaccinated. Ask your vet to examine the eye - some kittens will scratch themselves and cause small skin wounds, that may be the case. She looks healthy and very happy on the photos you posted :)
