Why are my 3-week old puppies crying, sneezing, and trying to escape?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Why are my 3week old puppies going to the corner of their whelping box with their head trying to stick out? They often cry at night, but in the day it’s not as much. Also, I noticed that one puppy had a runny nose then it led to two then they were sneezing and it’s seems like two more have the same thing now. They’re all fat and eat well so I don’t know what’s wrong. A puppy did recently cry while trying to pee. Also they keep moving around after sleeping for not too long.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Crying at night, trying to escape from the box, crying for no reason is a common behaviour in puppies at their age. As long as they feed well, pass urine and stools regularly, put on weight and are active there is nothing to worry about. Watery nasal discharge and sneezing is probably a result of upper airways viral infection. If the discharge is watery, you just need to to clean their noses with clean tissue (baby wipes will be fine). However, if the discharge turns green/yellow or they start to be lethargic, you should get them checked by your local vets.
