How to help my cat with frequent hairballs he keeps swallowing?

I would like advice about 1.5yr cat Alfonso's hairball problem. He has them frequently (1-3xweek) and seems to struggle to get them up- but he keeps swallowing them which seems to be the problem. I think he does get them up and doesnt spit it out for some reason. He eventually does, and then the process starts over again. I would love some advice that could help us get by for now while there are limited veterinary hours. I have tried to get a video but he knows and stops it all immediately

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Alfonso. Some cats do have frequent problems with hairballs. I recommend brushing him daily. That can help cut down on the formation of hairballs. I'd also recommend feeding him a hair ball formulated food. These foods can also help prevent the formation of hairballs. Royal Canin has a hairball food for cats that's excellent. There are also hairball gels you can give him which can help pass hairballs. You can try a brand like Nutri-Vet Feline Paw Gel. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Laxatone is a mineral oil-based product that's given by mouth in a paste form; it helps to bind the hair in the stomach which results in it getting eliminated through the feces instead of triggering vomiting. If your cat is long haired, getting them shaved down to a lion cut often really helps. I'm assuming that your cat is vomiting, since that is the most common (and often only) sign of hairballs. Normal cats with short hair should only vomit about every 3 months. Anything more than that is abnormal and can be from intestinal disease or food allergies and many other things. My cat keeps getting hair balls, what can I do to eliminate them?
There are a number of things we can try to help with hairballs. We can brush our cats more to get the loose fur off them, so they swallow less fur when they groom themselves. We can try higher fiber foods. We can try canned foods (which worked well with my cats). We can try hairball treats. We can try hairball remedies like Laxatone. I wish I could give you a simple answer, but every cat is different, so you may have to experiment with what works for Lily. Some combination of these ideas will work for many cats, but some cats continue to vomit hairballs. Those cats may need testing by their veterinarian to evaluate their GI tract. In long haired cats with severe hair balls where a hairball food (Royal canine, Hills and Purina make a hairball food) and laxatone do not help I recommend taking the cat to the groomer for a shave down. Hello and thank you very much for using our consultation service. Before I give you some recommendations on ways to prevent or treat problems associated with feline hairballs, I encourage you to make an appointment with your local veterinarian to make sure that your cat indeed does have hairballs. There are many gastrointestinal diseases that are feline patients can get that will show the exact same symptoms as that of hairballs. With that said there are two fairly reliable ways in which you can prevent hairball formation: 1. By feeding either a veterinary prescription diet or an over the counter diet formulated specifically to prevent hairballs. An example of the food would be hills science diet adult hairball cat food. But there are so many available besides this one. 2. Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Alonzo. It could be irritating from the hair ball or it could be due to a stomach illness. I can give you a home remedy for him see if that helps. I recommend withholding food for tonight, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. If he likes his current food then you can add in a hair ball medicine like catlax or laxatone. You can give this to him 2-3 times per week. If you don’t feel like you will be able to do that then I would go back to the food you were feeding before since it seemed to help. I like science diet, Royal canin, Iams, and eukanuba which all should have affordable hair all formula options. I hope this helps!

Helli Romeo has been puking up a lot of hairballs lately. Then within the last few days he has been puking up what looks like mucus but no hairball, he has been kinda moping around like he is not feeling well also.
I recommend brushing him daily, giving cat lax weekly to prevent hairballs, and you may want to switch to a hairball prevention diet. Sometimes the hair balls aren’t in the right place in the stomach to come out when they vomit. He may continue to vomit until he gets it out. Usually, if cats regurgitate undigested dry food they are eating their food way too fast. You may want to get a feeding toy into which you put his dry food ration (do not free feed dry food) two to three times daily. This way Soya has to work for her food by playing around with the toy which dispenses the dry food in individual pieces thus preventing your cat from eating too much too fast. As for preventing hair balls there are several things you can and should do: 1) brush/comb your cat regularly, removing any loose hair from its fur as well as mattes, before they get too big. 2) buy some hair ball remedy paste from either your vet or a pet shop and feed it to your cat according to the instructions on the tube. This helps prevent formation of hairballs. 3) Next time you buy dry food pick the type that specifies "Hair ball Prevention" on the bag. This should make you and your kitty happy!
