My kitten is losing fur on its face. What's causing this hair loss?

I have a kitten that is about 10 weeks today. About last week he started losing his fur on his face and we did recently switch food but I don’t know what food he had previous as the foster parents had him. I’m worried about him and want to make sure he’s okay.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Loki. Poor kitty. I don't know if the fur loss is connected to the food change, but it may be unrelated. It could be due to fleas, mites, or ringworm. I'd have him seen by a vet to have this diagnosed and treated. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Without seeing Bubu it’s hard to say why she has hair loss. I doubt it is from her diet but I would be concerned about parasites like fleas 9 demodex or she could have a skin infection. I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam. They may also check a stool sample for intestinal parasites which could be taking her nutrients causing hair loss. Good luck and kisses to Bubu!

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Oreo. Skin and hair coat problems can be caused by a variety of things including external parasites (fleas, ticks, mites, etc), nutritional problems including loss of nutrition/blood by intestinal parasites, other dietary issues, bacterial/fungal infections, among many others. I don't think the food is causing a problem unless you are not feeding kitten food and I have never heard of the litter causing a problem like this unless it is getting caked onto the hair and skin. They are definitely old enough to be dewormed and I would highly advise that. Deworming should start at 2 weeks of age and be done every 3 weeks for at least 3-4 times. If these areas of concern worsen and persist, I would highly advise you have your vet evaluate Oreo to try to figure out what is going on. Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Gizmo. Typically kittens start to lose their kitten fur around 6 to 12 months of age. Losing fur at this age can be a sign of a medical problem like mites. Without seeing him person, I can't say what is causing it and how it can be treated. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is likely due to allergies most likely to fleas. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having

I have just noticed hat my kitten has a bit of hair loss under his mouth and I’m not sure what the cause of it is. He goes outside quite a few times and I don’t know if that allergy or not. And how can I help treat it?
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Milo! If it is only a small area of hair loss it could be from him hitting or rubbing on something outside or an altercation with another cat. Other causes of hair loss are: skin infections, allergies, chin acne, ring worm or mites. It is hard to advise you on at home treatment with out seeing a picture or examining Milo. If the skin is not raw my best advice it to leave it be and monitor the area. If the area increased in size or the hair doesn't start to regrow then you should have your Vet examine Milo. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Crabcake. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian to ensure the hair loss is not problematic. Ringworm is unfortunately common in kittens. This could be spread to people and other pets in your home. Hopefully this is not the case, but you will want to know. I hope this information helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Your kitten is adorable! There are only really a few things that can cause this: 1) continued rubbing of the nose on something where the fur has been rubbed off 2) ring worm which is a fungal infection. It is diagnosed by culture. Antifungal medications and lyme sulfur dips are treatment. 3) a non-contagious mite called demodex. This is diagnosed on skin scrape and by examining it under a microscope. I recommend having a Vet take a look at him and see if any of the above are the cause of the hair loss.
