Why is my long-haired outdoor cat losing hair in large clumps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Pixiebob Longhair | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

Hello! There is a large, long hair gray cat that has lived outside of my house for several months, and during the winter I even provided a small house and food sometimes because I felt bad for it. Recently, I noticed that large clumps of its hair is falling out, and the sides and neck of the cat are practically half, with giant clumps of hair kind of hanging off the skin (unattached). I am not sure what to because I cant’t tell if it is in pain or if it has become a danger to my family (disease)

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Cleo. Poor boy. He may have a severe skin disease, mites, fleas, or may have been attacked causing this problem. I'd call the local SPCA to come and get him. That way, he can get the veterinary treatment he desperately needs and they can find him a home. If you are willing to take him in, you can bring him into the vet. Best of luck.
