My cat has a persistent cough. When should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Colorpoint Shorthair | Female | spayed | 7 years and 10 months old | 8 lbs

My cat has had a cough starting in the fall. The vet I am seeing has taken a xray the x ray did not show anything alarming and we have had her on medication as well as steroid shots. The shots seem to work for about a week and then the cough comes back. The one positive is the steroid shot seems to have shortened the duration of the cough. I seem to have come to a cross roads with the vet regarding his ability to diagnose the problem. Not sure where to go from here

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Muncie. Poor girl. This must be so frustrating not to have an answer. I'm wondering if it's time for a second opinion. I suggest that the best route is to take her into another vet to see if they can diagnose the cause of her cough. Best of luck.
