What's that strange growth in my dog's eye after a flash photo?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | BullBoxer | Female | unspayed | 16 years and 5 months old | 170 lbs

I took a picture of Trace with the flash on and noticed a strange growth in her eye. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it could be

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is a very interesting photo, and a great shot, however it cannot show us where exactly in the eye the mass is. It appears that it is within the globe of the eye itself, however it could also be in other locations. It is possible to get 'freckles' in the eye, however if there is a small mass, cancer is possible. I recommend you have Trace to the vet to have the eye assessed fully, and an ophthalmologist may be required. Some masses can be benign as well, and only a sample of the mass can confirm, but a simple eye exam to determine the exact location may be enough. It could also just be a normal feature of the eye that is presenting in an abnormal way (we call this 'artifact') on the image. Best of luck with Trace!
