When can I spay my puppy after a snake bite and steroid medication?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 4 days old | 10.6 lbs

My chihuahua/corgi mix puppy was bitten by a snake on 4/29. I adopted her from my local animal control and am supposed to have her spayed by 6/1. The plan was to get her spayed this month, however after the accident I’m wondering if there is a certain amount of time I will need to wait now? The bite didn’t require anti venom, she was treated with antibiotics, steroids, and IV fluids. She’s still receiving antibiotics and steroids at home and her last steroid pill will be on 5/22

Hello. I would probably wait another 10 days after the last steroid pill before taking Izzy to surgery. That means rescheduling her spay until around 6/10. I would call animal control & explain that Izzy was injured & has been on medications & delaying her surgery for 10 days is recommended. Hopefully, this will not be an issue. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
