Can baking soda help my dog's itchy skin without causing irritation?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach! Making your own shampoo May be difficult. Baking soda will not cause kidney failure but using improper ratios of ingredients could harm the skin. I would lean towards getting a shampoo such as Duoxo Calm for a maintenance shampoo. This particular shampoo will help strengthen the skin to keep it well hydrated and to prevent dandruff and itching secondary to dry skin. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Please do not use baking soda on Quinn. It is hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like she may have a skin infection. If she does, that could be the source of her odor. I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam. They may need to look at her skin cells under a microscope to determine the cause. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). The skin in the picture looks pretty raw, so I wouldn't use vinegar or baking soda. Aloe is safe for the skin and if it is ingested. If you see Lily licking, even once, she needs to wear an e-collar while the vet is sorting out the cause for the itching. You may want to talk to the vet about medications for the itch, also, like Apoquel or a short round of steroids. If the areas of itching are limited to one area, then a topical prescription ointment may give her relief. I know how frustrated you feel right now! Hang in there!

I recommend a cleansing bath in a hypoallergenic shampoo like aloe and oatmeal. You can also give Benadryl to control the itching. There is a section on this website that has dosages for common over the counter medications. Unfortunately, I can't advise you to use any specific products on your dog's skin without seeing her to get an idea of what's wrong - for certain skin conditions, the ingredients in the baby powder could do more harm than good by causing more irritation. There are some over-the-counter anti-itch sprays (usually containing cortisone or some other topical steroid) that are labeled for use in dogs - you can try one of these products if you wish. Aloe and oatmeal pet shampoos can also be soothing for irritated skin. If this doesn't help the itching, I would recommend having your dog examined by a vet - itchy skin and irritation can be caused by a number of different things, including seasonal allergies, external parasites like fleas, a bacterial or fungal infection, or skin mites (mange). Your vet can do a simple test called a skin scrape to check for some of these problems, and prescribe an effective medication for treatment depending on what they find.
