Can I get affordable heartworm medication over-the-counter or online?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 17 lbs

What over the counter monthly heartworm/parasite medication would you recommend? I can't afford to buy it from my vet at the moment.

Hi there. Unfortunately, there are no heartworm preventatives that are available over-the-counter - by definition, these are prescription products. But, you can certainly choose to order them through an online pharmacy like 1-800-PetMeds or Chewy.com if you like, as these may be less expensive than purchasing through your vet's office. Your veterinarian should be able to give you a prescription to have filled at any pharmacy you choose, as long as your pet has had an exam within the past year. :)

In order to get heartworm medication, you must get it from your veterinarian OR you can get a prescription authorizing heartworm medication to be used at a pharmacy. There are no heartworm medications available over the counter. I would contact your veterinarian for more information.

Tri-Heart is generic Heartgard and is just as effective. I am not sure why your vet won't prescribe it for you. You cannot buy any heartworm prevention over the counter so you will need a prescription. I suggest you bring your dog to one of the VETCO vaccine clinics at your local Petco stores (see schedule below). Bring proof of his last negative heartworm test and they can give you a prescription for the Tri-Heart. There is no charge for the exam. Just the cost of the medication. Hope this helps! I just moved to a city that is 7th in the nation for heart worms from mosquito's. I want to get a prescription for heart worm prevention. Is there a way to get that online or do I have to go into the local vet?
You will need to go to a vet as it requires a negative heartworm test before it can be prescribed. This is a simple, fast blood-test that will let the vet know it is safe to start preventive medication. Why this is required is if your pet already has heartworms and is given the medication, it can kill the worms too quickly which can cause blockages of the blood vessels leading to potential stroke or death. Making sure your pet is negative first will ensure it is safe to administer.

Two weeks ago Chico came to me thru animal rescue. Im wanting to start him on heartworm meds but the stores say i need a script to buy them. Why shud i have to pay for a vet to write a script for something ill end up buying online?
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question. You need a script because the medication is prescription only. Even if you tried to buy the heartworm medication online, it still requires a script. Should you find heartworm medications that do not require a script, they are counterfeit. I hope this helps!

Hello, I have adopted a new pure bred American Labrador and would like to get her started on heart and tick medications. I do not have a vet apt. until August 2nd and am looking for advice.
Hi and thanks for posting on Boop by Petco! The heartworm preventatives typically do require a prescription from your veterinarian which may require an exam initially if this is Annie's first time visiting her veterinarian. There are some over the counter flea preventatives such as Advantix and Advantage or Frontline. However, these may not work as well as prescription flea preventatives from a veterinarian. There are no over the counter heartworm preventatives- this does require a prescription with Annie's veterinarian. I hope this helps!

Does a vet have to give puppies heartworm prevention?
I do recommend monthly heartworm prevention starting at 8 weeks of age. It is a prescription so a veterinarian does not have to personally give the pill but you need to either buy it from a vet or get a prescription from a vet. The only medication that needed to be at a veterinarian's office is Pro-heart. This is an injectable heartworm prevention that lasts for 6 months. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Is it ok to get flea and tick plus heartworm medicine from Dr. Foster and smith.com or is it best to go directly through your vet? Why or why not?
Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Good question! In general it is best to purchase these medications from your veterinarian. When purchased through a veterinarian the company will most often guarantee the effectiveness. This is usually not the case with products bought online or over the counter. When sold through a veterinarian the company that manufactures the product will stand behind the product and often pay for medical treatment should the product not work for some reason. The veterinarian also knows how to properly store the product so that it does not get damaged or becomes ineffective. Finally, sometimes over the counter products or products sold online can be counterfeit or even dangerous to use. Your veterinarian also knows what particular products tend to be most effective for your location.

Is there any way I can get a rx for my dog for flea and tick chewables and or heart worm and intestinal worm treatment and preventive care meds
You would need to see a veterinarian in person to establish a valid veterinary patient/client relationship for Lucy and to make sure she is healthy to start preventatives. You could make an appointment with a veterinarian near you, or you can also obtain this service (along with a heartworm test which would be required first) at Vetco vaccine clinics.

I just found worms in my dogs stool and I don't have money to go to the vet .... are there over the counter meds
Typically, the only type of worms that can be seen in a dog's feces are roundworms and tapeworms. Medications that kill tapeworms are available only from the vet, and do require a visit. While there are OTC deworming treatments, they don't kill tapeworms, so you could be treating Chato but not killing the worms in his system. I would recommend taking him into the vet for an exam. He should get Drontal, which kills the four types of worms that infect dogs: Tapeworms, roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online.
