My dog's injured paw reopened from licking. Vet is busy. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Russian Toy | Female | unspayed | 3.7 lbs

A nail of the left-foreleg of my dog got injured last week. The nail was gone at that time and the finger has been swollen. Thanks to 5 days usage of "Metacam" provided by a vet, the injured place started to recover and the swelling went down. But, this morning, despite a medical collar she wore, she removed the recovered part by licking or somehow. The part turned red again. Would you give me your advice? The local vet is too busy and has no room for appointments so far. Thank you very much.

It looks like the area is pretty irritated again. Until you can get back in for an appointment, it is best to place the Elizabethan collar back onto Tiffany and keep the wound as clean and dry as possible. This can help reduce irritation and prevent any infections from worsening until your vet can take another look. If it is very red and swollen, they may also recommend antibiotics in addition to another round of pain meds.
