Is tap water safe for my dog if it's not safe for people to drink?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Japanese Akita Inu | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 4 months old | 60 lbs

Hi, i have been giving my dogs tap water in my country indonesia for a very long time, and they seem fine. But my friend said a week ago that its bad. People in indonesia can’t drink tap water directly unlike in new zealand. We need to drink water from the bottle sell in stores. So my question is tap water safe for dogs? Will i improve my dogs overall health if i change their water to that is used by people? Thank you

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If tap water is not safe for people where you live, it is also not safe for dogs. I don't think her health will improve once you change to bottle water, but she will not be at risk of getting infections that may be caused by drinking tap water.
