My dog has a new bump he's biting. What should I do about it?

My dog has this weird bump on his that i saw him biting at. I’ve never noticed it but it looks bad. It could be a tick or something but i just wanted to see if u knew what it was

This looks like it could be a growth and it's clearly bothering him if he's biting at it. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Give his vet a call to make him an appointment.

Any lumps/bumps that you notice on your dog should be checked out by your vet. Lumps are usually one of these things: * abscess (infection) * cyst * tumor/cancer There is no way I can tell you what it is just by looking at a photo but I have a suspicion these are cysts. That being said, usually they don't cause the dog any issues so that fact that he is biting at his tail makes me think he needs to see your vet.

This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors (very unlikely given the age). Is something wrong here? My dog normally has a wilder bump there but it seems to have gotten bigger.

Hi! This could be a benign or malgnant growth. Given his age and appearance, I think a benign growth or infection are more likly though you never know for sure until you have it tested. I recommend you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for a test called fine needle aspirate which is easy, quick and pain free and in most cases yields a diagnosis. In some cases a biopsy is needed. Having this information can help guide what the next step should be for him. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything will be just fine!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It is hard to know what this is without an examination. This could be a benign or malignant growth. This could even be an abscess. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. This may be an abscess, a cyst or a tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

I will typically perform a procedure known as a fine needle aspirate when a dog develops a new bump. I use a small needle to collect a sample of cells to evaluate under the microscope. This helps me to diagnose the bump. It could be a benign growth that does not require treatment, a cancerous tumor that needs surgical removal or even an infection under the skin such as an abscess.
