Why is my cat lethargic, not eating, and dry heaving bile? Urgent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My cat has been super lethargic and has been sleeping for the past 2 days. He has also had very little appetite and has been dry heaving throughout the night, sometimes producing little amounts of bile. He does drink bits of water whenever I put the water bowl below his mouth. This all occurred when it was raining heavily and he didn't return till later the evening, wet. He also caught a vole a few days ago but didn't eat it. Currently on a waiting list for the vet to ring me - any advice?

Unfortunately Ramu's symptoms are very vague and do not point to one specific illness. The dry heaving and vomiting are very concerning. It was my understanding that most vets in the UK are open and taking in emergency and urgent cases. I would consider this an urgent case. Continue offering him water as you have been. You may also want to get him some canned cat food to see if he will eat that. I really cannot recommend any medications without knowing what his underlying problem is. I would stress to the vet that this is an urgent case and he needs to be seen as soon as possible.
