Small 2-week-old kitten: When to worry? How to treat eye infection?

Mozzi is about 2 weeks old. She seems to be perfectly fine, but I noticed that she is smaller than her sister. Even though her sister have an eye infection but not her. Aside from her size, I think she's perfectly fine. When should I worry about her and step in to take care of her on my own ? And right now the vet is closed due to corona. Oh and, I saw on the internet you can use honey+water for remedy, apple cider vinegar+water and teramycin for home remedies for eye infection. Is that true?

Do not use that for the eye infection! It will not work. If she has an eye infection, she has to see a vet. Vets are considered essential services so you can take that kitten into the vet. As for Mozzi, start weighing her daily. If she isn't gaining weight every day, then step in and give her kitten formula on top of her nursing. Best of luck.

I'm sorry that you are having this issue. I know the vets are far away but she really needs to see one. That left eye looks very bad and I'm not sure home treatment will help. The eye looks swollen and you can't even actually see the globe (eyeball) - it may be abnormal/injured. That eye looks painful and the kitten looks very unhappy. Please try to get her to a vet. In the meantime, the only thing I can recommend you do is keep the eye rinsed out with saline solution. Put one cup of water and ½ teaspoon of salt into a pot. Put the lid on. 2. Boil for 15 minutes with the lid on (set a timer). 3. Set the pan aside until cooled to a room temperature. I'm sorry to hear that! It is best to bring the kittens into your vet so they can be treated with antibiotics for the infection and any other underlying issues taken care of. Until you can get to your vet, a warm clean washcloth can be used to keep the eyes open and free of debris, and keeping the kittens eating and drinking may help keep them comfortable.

Poor Tiny! She has to be seen by a vet immediately. That's because any eye infection should be considered an emergency, as leaving them untreated can lead to vision loss. It also sounds like she has a respiratory infection. I would have a vet on call or an ER vet see her right away. The vet can prescribe her medications for her symptoms to treat them. In conjunction with the medications from the vet, I can give you some things to try at home. Please know that these will not cure the eye infection, nor can they be used as a substitute for seeing the vet. It's extremely important Tiny is treated for her eye infection ASAP. At home, you can try starting her on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. I suspect that your kitten has bacterial infection of the eyes. She most likely will need a course of antibiotics from your local vets to get better, but as they are closed now, you need to keep cleaning the sticky discharge with warm, boiled water and cotton buds. Using eye soothing eye drops should be helpful too. The grey membrane is possibly a protruding third eye lid - common finding in cats with eye infections. As soon as your vets are open, please take Mozza to be checked over and to start antibiotics treatment.

Poor kittens! Eye infections can be viral or bacterial. Unfortunately you’re not likely to clear an eye infection with at home care. Just like with humans, these guys require antibiotic eyedrops which you will need to get from the veterinarian. I recommend to call your clinic and make an appointment ideally today. Eye infections in young kittens can become serious and cause permanent damage to the corneas. Bring the whole litter and the mother. Certainly cleaning off the teats and the rest of the environment will help but all the kittens have been exposed at this point. Eye infections are very common in young kittens, it needs to be treated with an antibiotic eye ointment, you will need to take her to the vet in order to get this ointment as it is prescription only.

As long as you are seeing some improvement, that is hopefully a good sign. You are still early in the treatment. I do however recommend to call the veterinarian and update them with the progress. They may want to switch antibiotics or they may give it another few days. I recommend to weigh the kittens daily. Kitten should gain weight every day and if they’re not gaining weight then that is a problem. This is likely the best way to know if the runt is doing well or not. Many times kittens with upper respiratory or eye infections can get maggots. Removing the maggots and treating the infection is the first step. The kitten may also have intestinal parasites, which need to be treated based on the type of parasite. Feeding egg yolks is not helpful, you will need to use a kitten milk replacer for nutrition and hydration. I would recommend that you have the kitten examined by a vet for the best chance at saving its life.
