Why is my dog panting, restless, and shaking head on levothyroxine?

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed | 6 years and 3 months old | 5.7 lbs

Coco started panting and became restless about 6 hours ago. She is also shaking her head, ears do not look inflamed, no discharge. Tongue looks pink. Coco takes levothyroxine 100mg daily.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Coco. Poor girl! It could be she is sick, may have injured herself, or this could be a side effect of her levothyroxine. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain. I'd have her seen by a vet now to be safe. Best of luck.

Panting is not a common sign in dogs taking medication for hypothyroidism. However, I did a little digging through some veterinary databases and found some reports of dogs panting excessively with different brands/dyes in the levothyroxine medication. Panting can be a sign that Bobbie's levothyroxine dose is too high, or could be a sign of other conditions, such as heart disease, pain or anxiety. Regardless, I recommend taking her to the vet for further evaluation. They may want to recheck her thyroid blood tests to check her current levels and will want to examine her to check for other problems. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

I’m sorry to hear that Chloe isn’t feeling herself. Is it possible that she received a Double dose of her thyroid medication this morning? Over medication with thyroid medication can cause these symptoms. Otherwise those can all be symptoms of discomfort. If her behavior continues then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by a veterinarian soon. My dog is panting and shaking excessively. I don’t know if that is normal or if it indicates an illness.
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Panting and shaking can be signs of anxiety (for example if there is a thunderstorm), pain, nausea or difficulty breathing. If you can not identify a source of anxiety for your dog, or the signs continue to worsen they should be seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is going on. The only way to know if this is related is to have the thyroid level checked again. I recommend to call your veterinarian and let them know what you are seeing. They will advise on how much medication to give and when to test. The only way to know if Glanni truly has thyroid disease is to stop all medication for at least 2 weeks. Then test a thyroid panel that includes the Total T4, the Free T4 by equilibrium dialysis and the Thyroid stimulating Hormone. This will give you a complete and accurate idea of his thyroid function. I do not advise to make any changes to the medication with out first speaking with your regular veterinarian. Also keep in mind that the behavior could be coincidental and related to something else entirely. Best of luck.

So I have my dog some ear drops for his ears because they've been itching him . Ever since I've given them to him he's been panting and shivering .. is this something to do with the ear drops ?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be that he is in discomfort from the possible ear infection and itchiness. If this is the case and his presumed ear infection responds to the ear drops then the expectation is that these signs you describe will improve. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Lentil is very cute and I love her name! Poor baby! I think you can wait until the morning. Her symptoms are are non-specific and can mean a lot of things. A poor appetite, shaking and panting can indicate pain or a fever. She could have hurt her neck or back, have lyme disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body (something stick) amongst many other things. I would call your Vet when they open and discuss having prednisone and/or another pain medication prescribed until he is more comfortable. If he is still reacting to the medication like that in a few days then he may be having a reaction to it and another ear drop might need to be tried. I hope this helps and I wish Hypno the best!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco. Shaking and panting can be signs of anxiety or possibly pain. It may be a storm or change in atmospheric pressure triggered her anxiety. I recommend looking into a product such as Adaptil, a natural pheromone that can help some anxious dogs.
