New 8-week-old kitten vomiting and diarrhea. Did he eat litter?

Hello! We just got a pure bread ragdoll cat. He is 8 weeks old. He had thrown up 3 times and had diarrhea Once. We just got him today and he is a little scared. We wonder maybe if he ate a little of his cat litter? Thanks!

It could be a change in diet if you are feeding Hank something different from what he had before. It could also be he has an illness. Vomiting and diarrhea together are pretty serious. You need to take him into a vet now. Best of luck.

Congrats on your new kitten, but I'm sorry she is sick! If she is eating a different brand of food from what she was fed at the shelter, this could be the cause of her GI upset (vomiting and diarrhea). Sudden changes in diets cause GI upset in cats, and they need to be transitioned slowly to a new food. I would withhold food for 8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I would be concerned that there may be something else causing her to vomit and have diarrhea. Canned food could cause some diarrhea but I wouldn't expect vomiting for several days as well. And while the formula could be the culprit it still sounds like she needs treatment at this point. At her age I would worry about intestinal parasites, infections or even ingestion of a foreign object. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian for an examination. Young kittens can become dehydrated or hypoglycemic quickly, sonthe sooner you can see a vet the better.

Yes, I would be worried. Any vomiting and diarrhea in a young kitten like this is cause for serious concern. They get easily dehydrated by losing fluids via vomiting and diarrhea. I suggest you get him to a vet as soon as possible for an exam and treatment. These symptoms could be due to almost any illness or disease process but most commonly I would be worried about a viral disease, obstruction in the GI tract or internal parasites (worms). Moving into a new home is stressful, but it shouldn't cause Thor to have vomiting and diarrhea as well as not eat. That tells me he is sick. If you are feeding him a different diet than what he got previously, that could be the cause of his illness. Try to tempt him to eat with some boiled white meat chicken (no bones), but if he won't eat this or the other symptoms continue, take him into the vet first thing in the morning. Best of luck.

With vomiting and diarrhea they may have a problem with the food or may have an infection such as giardia or coccidia. You can try a diet change to a sensitive stomach formula or prescription food such as Science Diet I/D to help. Adding probiotics to the food also helps regulate normal bacteria and speed up recovery from GI upset. You vet can check another stool sample to compare and see about adding an antibiotic if it is an infection.

Persistent vomiting and diarrhea can be dangerous in kittens, so you have good reason to worry. The biggest concern is that he can quickly get dehydrated, which is life-threatening. In order to keep this from happening, he will need to see a vet, so they can administer fluids. They also may be able to find the cause of the Diarrhea/vomiting and correct that. With kittens, I am mostly concerned about infections. Luckily, most of these are treatable, so getting him to the vet as soon as possible will make a big difference in keeping him from getting dangerously sick. I hope that helps and Theo gets well soon.

Your kitten may have intestinal parasites, which is the most common cause of diarrhea in young kittens. This can cause vomiting and stomach upset as well. I would recommend taking your kitten into your vet to have a fecal done to check for intestinal parasites. The kitten may also need some antibiotics to help clear up the diarrhea and a medication to help settle his tummy so he starts eating again.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor kitten! I worry about vomiting and diarrhea in a kitten so young. Dehydration and low blood sugar are a very likely and life threatening possibility. Causes of vomiting and diarrhea in young kittens are: intestinal parasites, viral (panleukopenia) and bacterial infections and diet. I don't know what you have been feeding but human dairy products are not appropriate food sources for cats and kittens. If kitten formula is still being given that can commonly cause diarrhea and/or constipation. I recommend orphaned or bottle fed kittens to start weaning at 3 weeks. Since this kitten isn't eating and is vomiting and having diarrhea it needs immediate veterinary care. Bring a stool sample to be checked for intestinal parasites. I wish you both the best!

Because Lillu is only 6 weeks old she doesn't have many reserves to fall back on and her immune system will be weak. Even a mild case of gastroenteritis could be very hard in her. If it is possible I would take her to the vet right away as prompt treatment is necessary to stop her getting dehydrated, and she may need to stay in for fluids. If you can't get her to the vet tonight keep her warm and let her drink but no food, and take her first thing in the morning.

Since you recently changed Ichiro's food, that could be the cause of his vomiting and diarrhea. Be sure to get him back on a kitten formulated food as soon as possible, as he needs that in order to grow properly. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps him. I recommend withholding food for 6-8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
