What can I do for my dog's red, itchy skin when I can't see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 17 lbs

My dog has an area on his skin that turns red at time. It will turn very red then settle down for a few hours and then turn red again. It seems very itchy for him and uncomfortable. What should I do? With Coronavirus it’s hard to see my vet.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is most likely a result of skin allergy. You should try soothing oatmeal shampoo (can be by TropiClean or Burt's Bees - both available online and at pet shops) - it will give Flip some relief. Once your vet is fully open, please take Flip for an appointment as he may need a prescription-only shampoo or anti-allergic tablets.
