Can a dog on prednisone safely take heartworm prevention medication?

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed | 7 months and 10 days old | 5 lbs

Chicken Noodle is on prednisone for tonsillitis. She is now on it every other day. She needs to take her monthly heart worm pill. Can I give it to her tomorrow since it’s her day off from prednisone. Or should she not be taking the heart worm until she’s completely done with the prednisone?

No worries. There is a wide safetly margin with the amount of dewormer a pet can have in one sitting. Olive will be just fine with the dewormer and heartworm prevention given at the same time. : ) In fact we give heartworm prevention and bi-annual dewormers together all the time. These medications are safe to give together and do not negatively interact with each other in any way. The heart worm medication is very safe to give with most conditions, so I would not be concerned about giving it unless your vet specifically advised not to give it. Heartworm medication tends not to have any noticeable side effects, but Rimadyl may have some adverse effects. The biggest concern with Rimadyl is that it can cause stomach/intestinal damage. If you notice that Jenny has a decrease in appetite, vomiting and/or diarrhea, then it's best to stop the Rimadyl and contact your veterinarian for further advice. Otherwise, these two medications normally have no noticeable side effects and are relatively safe. I hope that helps and Jenny feels better soon.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is a great question! Yes, you should continue to give Kirby his monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention. The medication to kill the whipworms will not prevent heartworm or fleas/ticks and therefore he will still require the monthly preventions. Kisses to Kirby!

Is Ivermec for heartworms safe to use with nexgard?
Yes it is safe to use these medications together. Just make sure you are using the ivermectin dose for heartworms or better yet a pre made heartworm product with ivermectin (Heartgard or otherwise). I hope this helps and thank you for using Boop by Petco!

Both doxycycline and prednisone can cause vomiting and diarrhea. I am not sure of the dose that your dog is on but maybe your vet could adjust the dose so he has less gastrointestinal problems. Feeding the medication with a meal can sometimes help with the gastrointestinal side effects so make sure to give with food. Your vet could also prescribe an anti-vomiting medication, probiotic, and GI protectant which may help, too. At this point, If he is just going to vomit the medication than it doesn't make sense to give it. You should wait and see if your vet can prescribe additional medications to help with the vomiting and diarrhea. If the vomiting and diarrhea has stopped, you could try to give one medication at a time with food and see how he does.

Hi there. In general, there is no reason that prednisone can't be given with Cosequin DS. As long as the prednisone was prescribed by your veterinarian and you're giving it according to his/her instructions, this should be fine. :)

Did you mean Pyrantel? Yes, it's ok to give pyrantel along with her normal heartworm prevention. make sure to have her stool checked again after treatment to be sure the infection is cleared. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Omega 3 supplements are great doe many conditions. I am not sure why Lily is on steroids. There is no interactions that you need to worry about with prednisone.
