My puppy has an undescended testicle. Is neutering safe and when?

I recently got a golden retriever puppy He's 85 days old. I got to know that one of the testicles didn't descend down to the place. Should i be worried? What should i do about it? Is neutering safe for my puppy? When should i get it done and does it have any side effects?

Neutering is safe and is very highly recommended. Simba likely is cryptorchid, which means one testicle is retained in the body and hasn't descended. Leaving it leads to a higher incidence of cancer and testicular torsion later in later. You can wait until he is a year old to neuter him.

If Sorn's testicle has not dropped by now, it will not drop. Neutering him at 11 months will not have any adverse effects on his growth, and I would recommend having it done as soon as possible. You are correct that there is a much higher risk of testicular cancers with this retained testicle, but there is also the risk that the testicle can twist on itself, cutting off it's blood supply. I would speak to Sorn's vet about having him neutered.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Cryptorchism is the term used to describe if one or both testicles are not descended in the scrotum. It is a genetic condition. The breeder shouldn't continue to breed this line. It will be fine to wait to neuter Dexter until he is 1 to 1 1/2 years old. I wouldn't wait much longer. The undescended testicle can become cancerous over time. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

Hello! Well, there are different ways to look at this. Definitely, having an undescended testicle complicates the neuter surgery, provided it doesn't descend in the next few months. Instead of being a relatively quick procedure, this if often an abdominal exploratory. Sometimes, the missing testicle is just found in the soft tissues near the scrotum, but sometimes it is up in the belly. As long as the testicle is found and removed at neutering time, there is no further concern, as far as I know! But, it does complicate things a little! So, it is up to you! Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. If you are nervous regarding the procedure, then I recommend having it performed by a board certified surgeon. This will greatly reduce the risk of a surgical complication. If the testicle is left in the abdomen, it will likely grow a cancerous tumor over time. So in most cases it is advised to have it removed prior to this happening. I hope this information helps!

In my experience, if they haven't dropped by 6 months of age, they aren't going to, so I agree with you. Although the procedure is more invasive when the testicles are in the abdomen, they might possibly only be in the subcutaneous space (the case in one of my dogs) and neutering in those situations is quite easy. I'd get a second opinion, because you're right - the longer they are under the influence of testosterone, the more those tendencies can develop. And the more prone they become to the development of testicular cancers.

Hi there! From the photos, it's a bit hard to tell if the testicles are there or not - usually, it's easiest to tell by gently palpating the scrotum when the puppy is standing up. The good news is, even if his testicles haven't dropped, this is not an emergency at all. Routine neutering at six months will still be just fine - the only difference is that the surgery may be a bit more invasive, if the vet has to look in his abdomen for the testicles rather than the scrotum. But, this is still a fairly common procedure that should not cause him any problems.

HI, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I think it is find to wait until Nigel is 1 year old to neuter him. The descended testicle (cryptorchid) should be ok for another 6 months. Overtime (years) there is a risk that the retained testicle can become cancerous. Good luck!

If a testicle is retained in the abdomen, then it is always best to neuter the dog. However, it is common that a testicle will move up and down in the canal in a puppy and most of those dogs will have the testicles remain in the scrotum as they age. I would certainly discuss this with your vet, but I will often recommend waiting until the dog is around 6 months of age to determine if the testicles are staying in the scrotum normally before making any surgical decisions. Marshal is likely a cryptorchid which means he still has a testicle retained in his abdomen. He should absolutely be neutered as the retained testicle makes Marshal at high risk for a certain type of cancer called a Sertoli cell tumor. I'd recommend having Marshal neutered right away. This condition is known as cryptorchidism and it is not recommended to breed these dogs due to the potential for passing on this condition to the offspring.
