Why is my dog's snout swollen if he's not in pain or bothered?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Airedale Terrier | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

My dog has a swollen snout, it’s not bothering him at all. He’s still eating. He doesn’t treat it any different than if I was touching his snout when it isn’t swollen.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The swelling is most likely an allergic reaction, usually from an insect bite or sting but it could be related to pollen or plant allergy. If it is not bothering Peanut at all, just monitor him at home and the swelling should disappear in less than 24hrs. If it becomes itchy and your dog stars to have fast and noisy respiration, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment.

Swelling can be caused by trauma, infection or allergic reaction. As long as Pan is behaving normally otherwise, you can monitor her to make sure the swelling decreases. If she becomes lethargic or has difficulty breathing as a result of the swelling, have her seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER.
