My cat's joint pain returned. Is glucosamine enough for her pain?

My cat was diagnosed with degenerative joint disease in April and I’ve been giving her 200 mg of glucosamine every day since then (Pet Naturals of Vermont hip + joint chews) when I first started giving them to her she stopped limping and seemed to be back to her old self. But she’s starting to show symptoms again. She’s not limping but whenever she sits she holds her paw off the ground. Can I give her 500mg a day? Does what I’m giving her now help with pain? If not what can I give her?

What you are giving Luna does not help with pain. I would not increase the dose of her glucosamine; rather, you need to take her into a vet to get pain medication prescribed. Please do not give her any human pain medications as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given.

I typically recommend the following: 1. Welactin omega 3 fish oil for cats 2. Cosequin for cats 3. Duralactin paste 4. Dasuquin for cats Any of these will be great supplements to use. You can use the Welactin and Duralactin together along with either Dasuqin or Cosequin (not both). I hope this helps! If Stella is in a lot of pain from arthritis, she may need more than supplementation and more along the lines of pain medication to reduce inflammation and pain. Yes, this is fine to give to your cat. Just be sure to get the one formulated for cats. I do recommend taking her into a vet, however, as she may be painful. Cats can be stoic about pain, and can be quite good at hiding it. If she is in pain, she would benefit from pain medications which the vet can prescribe. Unfortunately you cannot give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I would have her seen by a vet in the next day or two. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear about Luna. If Luna is limping there are many different possible causes, including soft tissue injury (such as a muscle sprain/strain, torn ligament), a fracture (it isn't always obvious when a pet breaks a bone if the fracture is not displaced), a torn or sore toenail, a skin infection of the toenails or bottom of the foot, nerve disorders, or in older pets tumors of the muscle or bone. I would recommend examination by a vet if the issue has been present since Sunday with no improvement. Unfortunately there are no safe pain medications available over the counter for cats, so I would just try to keep her quiet/restrict her activity/keep her indoors until she can be seen.

I'm sorry Luna is in pain and limping! Yes, you are correct she could have slipped on the wet floor causing the limping. I would rest her for the next couple of days. Keep her confined to a small room (be sure to put a litter box, food, and water in with her) so she doesn't move as much, and do not allow her outside if she is normally allowed outside. Monitor her, and if she is still limping by Monday, I would take her into the vet for a health check. It's very important not to give her any human pain medications. Many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. The vet can prescribe her pain medication as needed.

Hi there. Older cats can sometimes develop arthritis or other chronic orthopedic issues as they get older. You don't mention if she is declawed or not, but if she is, this would be even more common. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam when you're able to - if she does have arthritis, there are prescription pain medications that can be used long-term to make her much more comfortable, just like an older human with arthritis issues. In the meantime, you could also try adding a daily joint supplement such as Cosequin along with an omega-2 fatty acid supplement such as Welactin to her food each day. These can both be helpful for arthritis issues in both dogs and cats.

Is there a way to relieve my dogs pain at home? She has severe hip dysplasia and developing joint pain. She has been on hip and joint supplements and they have not helped at all.
If supplements alone haven't helped, it may be time to add in a pain medication or other joint medications to help relieve Halo's discomfort. Unfortunately, these do require a trip to the vet in order to be prescribed, but it's a good idea to schedule a vet visit anyway to monitor Halo's joint health and any progression of disease. Your vet may recommend regular bloodwork and X-rays to watch the hips for any additional deterioration so that medications and joint supplements can be adjusted as needed. Changing supplement types in addition to this, such as adding in fish oil and vitamin E, Green-Lipped mussel, or another glucosamine/chondroitin combo may also help, however, consulting with your vet first to make sure there is no interaction with other medications is best.

One sign is limping. If Lona starts limping, she is in pain. You will also see a decrease in activity. She won't run around as much and she will be reluctant to jump onto things. If you do see those signs, have her see a vet to discuss using pain medications. I hope this helps!

I think it's likely something recent. Limping means Lily is in pain, and unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give her. Many human ones are toxic to cats, and are fatal if given. I would take her into the vet in the morning for this problem. Rest her tonight as much as possible. No running, jumping, or playing.

Poor girl. It soundsl ike Masha may be experiencing arthritis. Pets can get arthritis in their joints and also along their spine (spondylosis). You can try giving her joint supplements (Cosequin over the counter) to see if this helps with her mobility for the next week or so. However, if she is still not able to regain her mobility, a vet visit is needed to have her spine and leg radiographed to properly diagnose the underlying problem. I don't suspect that her lameness issues have anything to do with her history of FLUTD. I hope this helps and best wisehs getting Masha some relief from her joint pain. I would not recommend giving her any over the counter pain medication because these are quite toxic to cats in particular. Your vet should be able to prescribe something to alleviate her discomfort that is safe and effective. Best wishes and take care.

I am very sorry to hear about your kitty! We do sometimes resort to steroids in cases where quality of life is suffering but try to avoid when possible. I would ask your vet about starting a glucosamine chondroutin joint supplement and starting Adequan injections. These can help many of these cases be more comfortable with no ill effects.
