My senior dog has sundowners. Will Trazodone help his night anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 13 years and 7 months old | 70 lbs

My senior black lab seems to be anxious in the evening, almost like sundowners in Alzheimer’s disease, although he is ok during the day. He startles easily, seems to be restless and pants . I am thinking of asking the vet for trazadone. Would this be a good way to calm him.

This could be canine cognitive dysfunction, which is like Alzheimer's in humans. I would have Mitch seen by a vet for this to see if he does have this. If he does, therapeutic foods, exercise during the day, and potentially a drug called Anipryl.
