My dog is panting, coughing, and tired. Should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 12 years and 4 months old | 66.14 lbs

Hello, I took my dog to a vet cause i noticed changes in his behaviour: he pants a lot, can't calm down at night and gets very anxious, caughs daily but not very often and he gets tired at walk a lot sooner than before(walks are now 20mins max). He isn't lethargic and has great appetite. The vet did cardio exam, but i wanted second opinion cause i wasn't very satisfied with whole exam and his opinions cause it's not his area of expertice. He said all is well and doesn't require any treatment.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sparkie. It is difficult to say with only one view, but I think that his heart looks enlarged on the x-ray. His trachea also appears elevated. This can cause coughing. Did he have any blood work performed to look for internal abnormalities? I would also evaluate his joints and mobility as this can be a significant source of pain in an older dog. It is worth seeking a second opinion if you are not happy with his exam. You know your dog. I hope this information helps!
