My senior cat is losing weight. What food helps him gain weight back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 lbs

My cat is a male orange short hair and he is at least 15 years old. Hes a rescue so we cant know for sure. I regularly feed him 2 small cans of wet food per day and he has a bowl of dry kibble that I leave out all day. He eats both cans of food and nibbles on kibble throughout the day. He also drinks plenty of water. He keeps losing weight which I think is because of his age. Are there any foods you recommend for a senior cat to gain weight? He is otherwise healthy.

Losing weight despite eating normally is a sign of a medical illness in senior cats such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, or even cancer. It's often the first sign of one of these problems. To be sure Kitty is healthy, you need to have him seen by a vet. I recommend getting a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis done. I'd have him seen by a vet tomorrow.
