My cat is trying to pee but little comes out. Is it an emergency?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 18 lbs

Hello, My cat keeps going to his litter box and trying to pee, but very little seems to be coming out. I plan to take him to the vet tomorrow morning, but I'm worried if it's okay to wait that long. Any advice to help him out?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Mowgli. I understand your concern. There is always a worry with male cats about a urethral blockage when they show this behavior. It's good you know to have him seen by a vet for this. If you see him trying to pee but nothing is coming out, he's yowling when trying to pee, his pee appears very bloody, he's lethargic, vomiting, refusing to eat, and/or he is licking his genitals a lot, you must take him into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, you can wait until tomorrow. Feed him wet food and add water to it to flush his bladder. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Echo. He needs to see an emergency veterinarian this evening. While he could have cystitis or inflammation in the bladder, he could also be experiencing a urinary tract obstruction. A blockage would inhibit urine from passing and this can be life threatening. The veterinarian will perform an examination and feel his bladder. X-rays of his abdomen may be necessary as well. From there a treatment plan can be determined based on whether he is experiencing an obstruction or not. I hope this information helps!

Inappropriate urination is often a medical issue and possibilities include feline lower urinary tract disease, a urinary tract infection, urinary tract stones, among other possible medical reasons. If she has been unable to produce much urine and she is actually obstructed, this would classify as an emergency and should be treated promptly instead of waiting for an appointment with your veterinarian. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Dexter. It could be he is suffering from feline idiopathic cystitis or bladder stones causing this urination behavior. If he appears otherwise healthy and happy, eats and drinks plenty, you can wait until tomorrow morning to see a vet. If he appears lethargic, ill or distressed, he cries when urinating, tries to urinate but nothing comes out, he makes multiple trips to the litter box, or if the urine appears very bloody, then he should be seen by a vet ASAP. Feed him wet/canned food, add water to it, and make sure he drinks a lot of water to help flush the bladder. I hope this helps!

This may sound odd, but luckily she is a female. Male cats can develop an obstruction of the urethra relatively easily, as the urethra is very narrow and can get plugged with inflammatory cells, debris, stones, and the swelling of the urethra itself can become obstructive. A urethral obstruction is an emergency, because life threatening electrolyte abnormalities can start to occur that can result in cardiac arrest, also the bladder can actually rupture. Having said all of that, this problem is rare in female cats. Its possible that a stone could get lodged in the urethra, but their urethras are shorter and wider than that of male cats so we just don't see it much at all in females. She very well may have a significant amount of inflammation in her urinary tract that is making her feel like she constantly has to go even when shes not producing anything. My best recommendation would be for you to try to palpate her bladder at home. When you put your hands around the back part

Our cat was crying a lot (and still is) when he urinated and it was bloody. We aren’t sure if he’s really sick and needs to go to an emergency vet.
This is a tricky one. On the one hand, as long as he is passing urine, he *may* be able to wait until morning. On the other hand, that is a pretty significant amount of blood in the urine and a urinary obstruction sometime at night cannot be ruled out completely. He is also crying which may indicate a degree of pain or discomfort. If Oboe was my cat, I would have him evaluated tonight. The sooner he is diagnosed and treatment is started, the sooner he will begin to feel better. He may have crystals in his urine or stones in his bladder or kidneys. Inflammation or infection in the urinary tract may also be present. Any one of these can lead to a complete urinary obstruction which then becomes a true veterinary emergency requiring immediate care.

It sounds like he has a urethral blockage so he needs to be examined by a veterinarian right away as this is an emergency and can be life threatening if not treated immediately. You could call your local humane society and see if they can help or try to find a vet that would take a payment plan. Some vets accept Care Credit so you could apply for that. This is a very serious problem and your cat needs to see a vet immediately! I hope you can find a way to get him treated!

This may be an emergency. Male cats can get a urinary tract obstruction which is life threatening. If he is straining to urinate with no output or just dribbling, he should be seen immediately. Pain is another indicator. I would recommend that you take him to the closest emergency clinic right away. If he cannot urinate, you should not wait until tomorrow.

If he is blocked, he cannot wait until tomorrow. A urinary blockage is a veterinary emergency and requires immediate treatment. Left untreated, toxins will build up in his blood threatening his life. Do whatever you can to have Precious examined and unblocked tonight. Go to the nearest veterinary ER. There is nothing you can do at home to help him.
