As with many common signs of illness in birds, prolonged, repetitive bobbing of the tail can indicate a respiratory infection. The key is "prolonged" and "repetitive". If a bird is having trouble breathing, the tail muscles work harder, causing the tail to bob up and down. So, if you are questioning it, then it is probably too much and your bird should see a vet.

Any noticeable tail bobbing is considered abnormal and usually indicates a respiratory infection. your assumption is not correct i'm afraid, most birds with respiratory infections will die if it is left untreated, a course of antibiotics is usually a must.

Thanks for reaching out about Budgie. This is often a sign of serious respiratory disease. The tail is bobbing to assist in inspiration, like a billows. A veterinary visit is needed as soon as possible. Possibilities include a bacterial or fungal infection, enlarged organ (liver, spleen), or pain. Good luck.

How much does a tail has to bob up and down for it to be considered tail bobbing? If my bird has a infection I assume that just like humans it's better to let the immune system do it's job rather then medications immediately, am i correct in assumin

Why does my parakeets always tail bobing, not close to death or disease are they scared because it happens every time I come near them?
Tail bobbing isn't really a symptom in itself, unless you are seeing other signs such as difficulty breathing, sleeping all the time, not eating/drinking. It could be you are just startling your birds, so they are hunching down when you are near, or they are just active and moving about if they otherwise seem healthy. Offering a treat when you come by to visit can help them bond with you. If you do start seeing any signs of illness, or respiratory distress (heavy breathing, panting, etc) then scheduling a vet visit to rule out any more serious issue is best.

The tail bobbing, opening and closing mouth may be indications of respiratory difficulties. This may bebdut ot infection (bacterial, fungal or parasites) or trauma. The fluffed feathers, when taken with other symptoms may further point to potential illness. Ideally, she should be physically examined by your veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment. Birds are quite adept at concealing illness or injury so by the time they start to show symptoms, they may be very sick.

Hi, I had just gotten my budgie from PetCo a week ago. Then I had noticed that his tail is slightly going up and down a lot, but he is really active and also I dont hear him panting or anything of that. Should I be concerned?
Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite, loose droppings, wheezing or discharge from the nose or mouth/beak. These are all symptoms of illness/respiratory infection.
As a "new" pet, Kumo should be examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any preexisting conditions.

Some tail movement can be normal because birds have to expand their entire chest to breathe in and out, so that could be what you're seeing. If Tangerine is otherwise healthy, just keeping an eye on her is best. However, if she seems to be having a hard time breathing, has any discharge from the nose or mouth, or becomes listless and refuses to eat or drink, this can mean illness which should be checked out by your vet.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to give a long or detailed answer without having examined your bird and only having one general symptom to go off of. Parakeets may head bob their heads or tails if they are just adjusting their crop after eating (which is normal) or it can be a general sign of illness in birds. Without more information, or other symptoms, activities, etc given, it would be hard to give more info beyond this. If you suspect Baby is ill, then trying to find a vet that will see him is best. Making sure he is eating and drinking, checking for any other symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, changes in stool, losing feathers, stool stuck to bottom, etc can also help make it easier to tell if something is wrong and also narrow down possible causes. If he is ill, moving him to a hospital cage that is warm and away from other birds can help.
