My dog ate a bone. Why is he lethargic, vomiting, and has diarrhea?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 25 days old | 80 lbs

My ~80lb 10 month king Sheppard collie ate a very large bone yesterday (~10inches) smoked beef or pork from butcher. This morning he acted fine but had diarrhea, this afternoon hes been lethargic, more diarrhea and vomited

I'm quite concerned this bone is causing Simba's problems. Bones should never be given to dogs because they cause obstructions, and he is potentially showing signs of an obstruction. You need to take him into a vet immediately.

This is very serious and he needs immediate veterinary attention. The bones are probably still in his stomach and intestinal tract and the diarrhea can quickly result in dehydration. Many dogs also get pancreatitis from eating rich, fatty foods. He will need fluids, an X-ray to determine where the bones are, and possibly surgery. It is not good to give your dog bones, especially poultry bones as they can shatter and cause obstructions or irritate/injure the GI tract. If November has eaten bones and is now showing signs of illness (not eating, moaning in pain, seeming in distress) it would be best to seek veterinary care ASAP for an exam.

Oh no, it's not good your aunt gave Kiba sheep bones! It's a good sign that he is eating, drinking normally, and seems fine on walks. I would monitor him for now. Should he start vomiting, stops eating, stops drinking, has diarrhea, has blood in his feces, has blood in his vomit, or becomes constipated then I would be extremely concerned and have him seen by a vet immediately. These are signs of an obstruction and perforation of the intestinal tract, and it is a medical emergency. Should that happen, Kiba would need surgery. I understand being concerned about this lethargy, and if it continues over the next 48 hours, I would take him back into the vet for an exam. I hope this helps :-)

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I'm sorry Shadow isn't feeling well. It could be pancreatitis but it could also be just general stomach upset. He ate something his body isn't used to and there were sharp bone fragments. He could also have a piece of the bone stuck somewhere. I would recommend taking him to the vet because he is young and I don't want him to dehydrate. They may need to take X-rays. They can then give him medications to calm his stomach. In the future I would not recommend giving Shadow any bones for fear of the above things. Good luck and kisses to Shadow!

Hello, I would recommend taking Leo to be seen by his veterinarian. If Leo ingested a large piece of bone, it could become stuck in his intestines and require surgical removal. Ingestion of bones can also cause inflammation of the pancreas, perforate the gastrointestinal tract, break teeth, and more. You should never give your dog bones, it is possible that he has an intestinal blockage due to the bone ingestion, i strongly recommend taking him to the vet ASAP in order to have an xray done. if the bone is still there and blocking the GI system, a surgery to have the bone removed is necessary.

Keep an eye on Dobby. As long as he's keeping his food down, keep feeding him and offering him plenty of water. Give him half a slice of whole wheat bread with each meal. This may form a ball of ingesta around the bones, and cushion them as they pass through the GI tract. If he continues vomiting, there is blood in his vomit or feces, he becomes lethargic, and/or he stops eating, he needs to see a vet immediately. In that case, find an ER vet or a vet on call. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

Oh no, it's not good that David ate that bone! Diarrhea can be a sign of obstruction, and it is likely that the steak bone can lead to an obstruction. I would take him into a vet immediately for x-rays. There's nothing you can do at home from him, if he does have an obstruction from the bone, he needs surgery to remove it. Please take him into a vet right away.

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Bones and raw food of any kind are a huge danger to any dog as they can cause serious infections, can perforate (poke a hole in) the intestines, cause gastritis, pancreatitis, and other issues. I would be very worried about a septic abdomen with Rowdy. If he is still not acting normally I would have him rechecked with your vet ASAP to do x-rays, a possible abdominal ultrasound to make sure there is no free fluid in his abdomen. If these are normal then your vet will likely treat for a gastritis/pancreatitis. If he can't stand and is having diarrhea, he could be very dehydrated and need IV fluids as well. I would strongly suggest pursing these other tests, especially if Rowdy is still acting the way you have described, with diarrhea and unable to stand. Best of luck with Rowdy.

It sounds like Jax is certainly not feeling well. It may or may not have anything to do with the bone. Depending on what type of bone it was and if he actually ingested it, there are a few possibilities. If he bit off pieces of bones that may be in his GI tract, he may be painful , have an obstruction and could have an infection. If it was a marrow bone, those can be very rich and fatty and cause an upset stomach that can be severe. We can also see bacterial infections or contaminated bones. And again, what is going on with him may not have anything to do with the bone. Unfortunately, it's impossible to know what is going on without more information. I would recommend starting with having your veterinarian examine him to determine if he is running a fever and if his belly hurts. They may also need to check some blood work or take x-rays depending on what they find on exam. It sounds like Jax is really not feeling well, and I do not expect that he will get better without addit
