Is my dog's scratching, licking, and bald spots due to allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 59 lbs

Can dogs have allergies to such things as washing power like some humans are? What symptoms would indicate this? I ask because we have 2 boxer dogs one of which is and always has been a bit of a scratcher and a licker. Over the past week this has gotten much worse to the point where he's scrathed and licked himself he has not only begun to creat bald patches the skin is inflamed and developed scabs. the only change for him is he started wearing his coat when its cold. could the ciay cause this

It's possible that Nacho has a hypersensitivity to something like washing powder, but it would be far more likely that he is allergic to an environmental allergen like dust mites, mold or pollens or potentially to something in his food. When dogs have allergies they tend to manifest as itchy skin which can lead to secondary infections. I think you should have him examined by your vet - he may need treatment for allergies and a skin infection.
