Should I put my suffering 12-year-old Golden Retriever down?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 12 years and 9 months old | 75 lbs

Hello, I’m having a really hard time deciding if I should put my 12 year old golden retriever down. I made an appointment Monday and know it’s probably best for him but I keep second guessing myself. He has lung cancer, an amputated leg, a cyst that opened up and smells, he cannot walk or get up because of disc and ligament issues. He’s still eating some but he’s lost weight. I know it’s the owners decision and not the vets, but I guess I just need reassurance I’m doing what’s best.

I'm so sorry you are facing this decision. Based on what you have told me, it sounds like his quality of life is pretty poor if he cannot walk or get up. That's not a good life for a dog to live. I get second guessing yourself, even I do that when it's time to put one of my animals down and I'm a vet! It is never an easy decision to make, but ask yourself what quality of life Bailey has if he cannot even get up. I think you are making the right choice for him, even though it's so hard for you. I hope this helps.
