My dog has bladder stones and refuses prescription food. What to feed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 20 lbs

Hi I wondered if you had any recommendations of a food that I could feed my 20ld yorkie/coton mix. A year ago he had to have uroltihs stones removed and this year cysteine stones. He won’t eat the prescription food and I am not sure what to do. Currently I make him cooked chicken and rice, I appreciate any help you could give me, thank you.

Cooked chicken and rice isn't a balanced diet for Buddy. Have you considered that his not eating the food could be due to an illness? I'd have him checked out by a vet to make sure everything is ok. If everything is ok, then discuss diet options with his vet. Given he's on a prescription diet, only his vet should make the decision on what to feed him. I don't want to suggest anything that would go against what his vet wants.
