My cat's blood test shows high cholesterol and creatinine. Is he okay?

The only thing that is high on Ennead's blood work is cholesterol. His creatinine is within normal limits. You need to speak to his vet about why his cholesterol is high, and make a plan from there.

Poor guy. I see elevate liver enzymes (ALT,AST) and kidney values on the paperwork you have attached here. Low hgb means that the red blood cells are not oxygenating well, but if the RBC count is also low (anemic) then that is a sign of chronic kidney failure. Cats can recover from kidney disease depending on the underlying cause. An abdominal ultrasound is needed to determine the cause of the kidney failure exactly, or a positive response to bloodwork is used as a means of determining a positive outcome. In most situations we treat the pet with fluid therapy to help idurese (flush out) the harmful toxins (BUN, CREA), get the pet started on a prescription kidney diet (ie. Hill's K/D, Royal Canin Renal) and also a supplement (Azodyl- which helps to remove toxins from the gut) can be given as well. The most concerning values for me on this bloodwork are the liver values (AST, ALT). It is not common for a cat to be in both kidney failure and to have abnormal liver values concurrently.

His SDMA is normal which is a more reliable marker for kidney function. He may have been mildly dehydrated which can cause creatinine to elevate. Your vet could run a urinalysis to check his urine specific gravity and then recheck his BUN and Creatinine in 3 months to monitor for any increases.

Poor Robin Hood. Chances are that he doesn't have true kidney disease at his age. I would stop feeding the canned meat and try to just feed him cat food until his next recheck. If his values are still elevated at his next recheck, I would ask the vet about checking his urine specific gravity to see if the kidney elevations are from the kidneys themselves or some other cause. Also, with them just being right above normal, this could be his "normal" if he is a muscular cat. Your vet should also be able to sent off a test called an SDMA to help determine if this is truly kidney related. Finally, if they truly believe it is due to his kidneys, I would have an abdominal ultrasound done to see what his kidney look like. I would be worried that he may have polycystic kidney disease if he is showing signs of kidney disease at this young age. I know it is hard not to do but I wouldn't get too worked up quite yet. Thank you for sending over the copies of Gonzie's blood work! Looking at the provided results, I see that his creatinine is a tiny bit elevated. This value increases with kidney damage or dehydration. I'd certainly recommend talking to his vet about rechecking his kidney function in a month or two, as well as running a urinalysis to see how well his kidneys are working to concentration his urine. The monocyte increase is extremely mild. I don't worry when this type of white blood cell increases a tiny bit while other white blood cell lines (especially the neutrophils and lymphocytes) are normal. Stress alone can trigger this minor elevation. The RDW helps to give the proportions of the red blood cells' size and volume. Again, this minor elevation does not seem to be significant. A 50% hematocrit is slightly elevated, which means that Gonzie has some extra red blood cells. I would much rather see too many red blood cells than too few! His blood volume could also be more concentrated if

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Toby. Dehydration shouldn't affect creatinine. It affects BUN. Not sure what caused the slight rise in creatinine but that usually means there may be some kidney dysfunction. It's not that elevated and could be laboratory error also since the BUN is normal. Liver enzymes can become raised for many reasons. Liver inflammation, infection, pancreatitis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, toxin exposure, among many other things. I don't think feeding a wet food is a bad idea, it forces the cat to take more fluids in since canned food has a high water content. I would also recommend a liver supplement to address the rise in the liver enzymes. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Creatinine level of 3.3mg/dL does suggest CRF. If Patch was on iv fluids treatment recently (between these two blood tests), it is possible for CREA level to go down to normal. However, if Patch did not receive any iv fluids, I would suspect one of the reading was incorrect and should be repeated. High BUN suggest kidney disease as well, but it could also be due to dehydration, gastrointestinal bleed, recent feeding and more. Elevated TBIL is also a concern as it could be a sign of liver / gall bladder / bile duct disease. Less commonly, it is due to hemolytic anemia (in that case Patch would have evidence of anemia). Please, get in touch with your local vets as ideally, the blood test should be repeated and should include hematology.

Aside from early kidney disease, are there any other immediate concerns from this bloodwork ? Negative for FIV and FeLV .. she is 7 and obese / has been on a diet since we got her 2 months ago. We have to do a urinalysis still. Thank you
Even though Annie's SDMA is at the upper end of normal, I don't see evidence of early kidney disease due to her normal BUN and creatinine values. A urinalysis will help to determine how well her kidneys are functioning to concentrate urine. It looks as though she has a few extra red blood cells (mildly increased hematocrit) and is making some extra red blood cells (slightly increased reticulocyte count), as well as a mild drop in her neutrophils (a type of white blood cell). All of these fluctuations could be associated with a relatively recent mild infection or illness that she's since recovered from. If she's clinically doing well, I wouldn't otherwise think too much of these values. I see that she also has a bit of hyperkalemia (high potassium), which is increasing her Na/K (sodium to potassium ratio). While hyperkalemia can occur with kidney disease, I would also expect to see at least moderate increases in BUN and creatinine at the same time. Other issues, like stomach upset, para

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! A phosphorus binder is used when the phosphorus is high not when just the creatinine is elevated. I would have your Vet get a urine sample and a blood pressure. This will help stage Ike's renal disease. Prescription renal diets are highly recommend to slow progression of disease. Blood pressure medications should be used if high. I wish you the best!

BUN and creatinine are elevated which may mean that there is a kidney failure going on (Urine specific gravity should be tested ideally to check if the kidneys are able to concentrate the urine). Amylase is moderately elevated as well and could suggest an inflammation of the pancreas. Hi there. Based on these lab results, I don't see anything concerning here - it looks like this kitty's liver and kidneys are in good shape, normal blood sugar (so no diabetes), and normal thyroid. The minor changes noted (slightly elevated protein, and slightly elevated eosinophils) do not generally have any major clinical significance. So this wouldn't concern me at all, as long as he seems healthy clinically. It sounds like he's a pretty hefty boy, so I agree that getting him started on a weight loss plan would probably be a good idea! I hope everything works out well for the adoption. :)
