My cat's eye is closed and gunky. Is it serious? Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Female | 2 years and 10 months old | 0 lbs

My cat’s left eye seems to be weird, she keeps it closed most of the time for maybe three days now. My mum said it was because she’s been playfighting with the other cat but i don’t believe that’s it. i opened it myself 2 days ago and there was a bit of gunk on it, where should i go from here? should i use something to clean her eye maybe like a cotton wool bud soaked in water?

Luna needs to be examined by the veterinarian. When pets squint their eyes, it indicates pain. The most common causes are a scratch on the cornea or a viral infection. Both of these conditions are not only painful, but they can get worse quickly. She needs medication to treat the eye and an Elizabethan collar to prevent any rubbing which could make it worse. Have an exam in by the veterinarian today. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Minnie! Minnie could have a scratch on her eye (corneal ulcer) from trauma or infection. A very common reason for an eye infection is a primary viral infection (herpes, calcivirus) and then a secondary bacterial infection. If she does have a cut on her eye lid she may need stitches and/or antibiotics. Since it has been 3 days with little improvement I recommend that you have your Vet evaluate the eye. I wish Minnie a speedy recovery!
