My dog has white segments in poop, not eating, losing weight. Help!

Tapeworm segments are white and they are often seen on fresh poop. Also sometimes on the fur around his anus. They are caused by eating a flea when chewing on the skin, or eating a mouse or rodent. You can purchase tapeworm medication from PetCo, or your veterinarian. Make sure you treat him with a flea prevention product so he doesn’t get infected with tapeworms again. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian and bringing a stool sample in to your vet to confirm this. Worm eggs are generally not visible, but adult worms and tapeworm segments are and generally move in fresh stools. It may be helpful to take the sample for a fecal exam and also to see if he is chewing anything like white plastic, bones etc which may be passed in stool; other causes may be poor digestion and undigested fat in to stool

If the white specks in his poo look like grains of rice or sesame seeds then it is likely your dog has tape worm. ask your vet to treat your puppy for the parasites he diagnosed via a fecal sample (if he has not done a fecal sample, take some fresh poop to your vet for a fecal exam). You may also want to start with flea prevention as tape worm is transmitted by fleas.

It sounds like it was a tapeworm. They are flat and segmented. The length depends on the segments that come out--they are offered compared to pieces of rice when individual. These worms are transmitted by the ingestion of a flea which can lead to a dull hair coat and dandruff also. It generally does not affect the appetite and cause that mucous and blood in the stool as noted in your pictures. I would be worried there is an infection of some sort and these worms are a secondary finding. You can find tapeworms medicines at the vets office or any pet store, but if the stool continues I would see a vet for further testing

Weight loss, vomiting and diarrhea are very vague signs and common to many conditions - parasitic, bacterial and viral gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, liver and kidney disease can all cause the symptoms you describe. I strongly recommend a full blood panel in order to investigate internal causes as the weight loss is progressive and would suggest that there may be additional complicating factors present. Semi-solid and liquid foods such as freshly boiled chicken and rice can be easier to digest than dry or solid foods and may help the bowel to readjust, I would also consider adding a probiotic such as fortiflora in the meantime as this may help with bowel recovery following the bloodied diarrhea

It's hard for me to tell what is what in your pictures. Small white parasites that resemble grains of rice are often tapeworm segments. Other intestinal worms will be longer and more like types of spaghetti. They are easily treated with OTC dog dewormers. A vet examination and fecal parasite screening should be able to determine what intestinal parasites Izzy might have for more in-depth treatment.

The picture does not clearly show any tapeworm segments but remember there are many types of roundworms also whose eggs require a microscopic exam. If she eats non-food items regularly she should be dewormed monthly as a precaution

As a first approach I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 4 days. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
