My cat was put to sleep for a blood clot. Was it the right decision?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 3 years and 6 months old | 10 lbs

Scoco my cat was put to sleep this morning. I took her to the vet Monday evening for rapid breathing. He gave her a steroid as it looked like asthma. Then again on Tuesday and a different steroid was given. Nothing worked. Took her in yesterday and she was kept in. She had fluid outside her lungs and they drained it. Her breathing got worse. she got a clot and her back legs were paralysesld. Anti clotting meds didn't work so the vet told me to put her to sleep. Could anything else have been done

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of Coco. Generally when cats throw blood clots the prognosis is very very poor. The blood clots can be treated and the cat may pull through but it's highly likely to throw another blood clot even with medications so in general, it is most humane to let these cats pass peacefully and painlessly. It sounds like Coco had a very bad heart and it would have been unlikely that she would have tolerated the fluid therapy needed to help break a clot. It is hard to loose a pet but sometimes euthanizing them is the kindest action we can provide our beloved companions. My condolences.
