Is this spot on my senior mini Schnauzer's chest a melanoma or injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

Got an 11 year old mini Schnauzer with the following on his chest, see photos. I am not sure if he injured himself and this is just the healing process or whether this might be a melanoma? I understand that a vet would need to take a look and possibly perform a skin test, but I would still appreciate your feedback from the pictures attached.

A melanoma would be pretty unlikely since this lesion does not look raised - cutaneous (skin) melanomas in the dog are usually growths that protrude from the skin. Cutaneous melanomas in dogs also tend to be benign. Based on you pictures I think this could be a focal area of skin infection, but a healing wound would also be possible.
