My senior dog is having accidents and snapping. Is it his age?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 14 years and 10 months old | 60 lbs

Duke is getting older and I've noticed he's been having accidents in the house. He's extremely well potty trained, never had any accidents before. He also seems to be getting aggressive towards my kids (age 14 & 8). He has snapped at both kids when they try to take him outside. He has ALWAYS been a very good natured dog.we also have Lily now, she's almost 6 months old. He's never had to deal with other animals but he lets her know when to leave him alone. Is this because of his age or jealousy?

If only Duke could talk! The first thing I recommend to do is have Duke thoroughly examined by the veterinarian. Have them check his urine and stool for any evidence of abnormality which could cause him to start having accidents (most older dogs do not have accidents due to age but it is possible). Also have them check his neck, back, hips and legs for pain. It's possible pain is causing him to be irritable and more likely to snap. Older pets often have arthritis and benefit from joint supplements and pain medication. I hope this helps. Please feel free to post any additional questions.
