Why is my parakeet fluffing feathers, craning neck, and gasping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | 0 lbs

My parakeet is kind of fluffing up its feathers and rhythmically craning it’s neck forward with its mouth open. What do you think is the problem?

By your description, there may be some respiratory issues developing. A respiratory infection is quite serious in birds. Ideally, Cricket should be physically examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet for diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime, keep him warm and as stress free as possible until he sees the doctor.
