My new kitten has a small sore wound above her eye. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 months and 13 days old

Hi, our brand new kitten has a small wound above her right eye. This has happened between 11am and 6pm today. There is no evidence of blood and she doesn't seem irritated but it does look sore.

Ouch! Poor Athrns. I would keep an eye on the wound and keep it clean and dry as well as use an Elizabethan (cone) collar to keep her from rubbing at it. If the area doesn't heal, worsens, swells up, or becomes hot or painful to the touch that can indicate an infection which should be seen by your vet.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Be very careful to avoid any contact between the solutions and the eye. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any). If you do not see any improvement in 3-4 days a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics are needed to solve the problem.
